Strategy
The program’s projects and activities are structured according to the environmental strategy of arcenciel: community work to identify and assess people’s specific needs, the establishment of service institutions which provide specialized services and inclining public programs and policies to ensure national legal framework.
History
Waste managment
In 2003, arcenciel began its engagement in the environmental field through waste management in response to requests from hospitals. Health facilities in Lebanon face the need to find a sustainable solution to PIHCW (potentially infectious healthcare waste). Poorly managed, these wastes constitute a danger to public health and the environment. arcenciel created the project Deho (hospital waste), whose objective is nullifying Lebanon’s risk associated to hospital waste. It implements a national network for the management of medical waste, consisting of five processing centers which cover all regions of Lebanon.
Autoclaving is the sterilization method used, an optimal technology from an environmental, social and economic point of view. This initiative has revealed the need for solutions regarding other types of hazardous or non-hazardous waste. Following the methodology adopted for PIHCW, arcenciel offered sustainable waste management practices, which they began to implement through pilot projects.
Education for development
During various field missions carried out under the frame of the Deho project, arcenciel was able to detect an increased need for education and awareness concerning sustainable development. Indeed, the Lebanese public is not sufficiently aware of its right to live in a healthy environment and the duty it takes to preserve it. Awareness in new generations concerning social, environmental and economic problems, and their accountability in this regard is a key element for sustainable development, unfortunately this concept is not yet sufficiently integrated in the school curriculum. In addition, gathering young people around the theme of sustainable development is a way to unify the Lebanese youth despite political differences. Thus, in 2008, the Education for development sector was born, in which the main purpose is providing the educational community with tools and concepts useful for understanding the concept of sustainable development, the importance of natural preservation, and the idea of solidarity.
