Needs

Evident environmental degradation in Lebanon is partially due to lack of awareness. In fact, the Lebanese public is not sufficiently conscientious to its right to live in a safe and healthy environment, and to the need to preserve it. Despite the fact that educating new generations pertaining social, environmental and economic issues, along with their accountability in this regard is a key element of sustainable development, the concept is not yet sufficiently integrated within the academic curriculum. It is through this perspective that arcenciel began a mission to bring young people together around the theme of sustainable development as a way to unite the Lebanese youth who have been long divided by political differences.

• Recycling initiative in Central Bekaa to reduce resource strain, in collaboration with USAID

  Creation of a network of collection and processing of recyclable waste
  And awareness raising on sustainable waste management
  Meetings and needs assessments were conducted in 55 organizations located in Bar Elias, Talababaya, Saadnayel, Jdita, Taanaye, Marej, and Ghaze. 182 awareness and training sessions were conducted in 48 organizations, reaching more than 4824 beneficiaries among Syrian refugees and Lebanese communities. 35 follow up visits have been conducted in 31 organizations. 228 sorting bins have been distributed to 49 organizations. A center for recyclable waste preparation for recycling was equipped. A network for recyclable waste collection and recycling, including 32 schools, universities, informal tented settlements (ITS) and businesses was created

• Awareness rising on health care waste : training sessions for Health care staff in Abbassieh; awareness activities and distribution of leaflets on solid waste to general public, schools and scouts groups, thanks to OMSAR

  This project aims to educate the public and train hospital staff regarding hospital waste management.
  Training and awareness regarding HCW management was provided to 331 persons from hospitals. Public workshops to raise public awareness were organized. Visits of the treatment center in Abbasiyeh were organized.

• Awareness campaign for waste management within the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el Helwe, with UNRWA

  Improving waste management within the Ein el Helwe camp in Saida.
  An awareness campaign promoting waste management good practices was conducted in the sector 1 of Ein Helweh camp reaching directly about 600 refugees, and indirectly 15000 refugees.
  The evaluation of the project showed that, important results were achieved in terms of raising awareness about waste management issues.

• Project "rainbow drops"

  

  In the framework of the project “rainbow drops” conducted by arcenciel in partnership with UNDP, Coca Cola, and the Ministry of Energy and Water, in order to promote sustainable water management and consumption, a rainwater harvester was installed in arcenciel center in Tanail. This system will insure until 70% of water needs in Tanail center. The filtering technologies in the proposed system induce a water safety, allowing using it for a wide range of use. In the same time, the center was equipped by different awareness tools related to water thematic. An animation movie called “droppy’s day out” has been created. • L’Ecole Agit 1, « School Acts 1 » (2008/2009 )

  L’École Agit 1 (2008/2009)

  

  In 2008, arcenciel make a demand for projects related to schools, colleges and high schools which can be ready to effectively engage in the process of sustainable development. The School Acts project suggested to create new projects to primary, middle, and secondary schools, on various themes such as: earth, air, sea, flora, fauna, and the practice of solidarity. Fifty sustainable development projects were then presented. An exhibition of models, posters and photographs prepared by students was held in the arcenciel center at Jisr el Bacha.

  
  

  School Acts 2 (2009-2010) and School Acts 3 (2010-2011)

  In two consecutive years, a hundred scouts were involved in 12 schools in the Akkar area in order to conduct fun activities using themes such as the environment, health and hygiene through classes and recreational courses. Several educational kits were distributed to meet children's basic needs for intellectual development in accordance with the heads of institutions; various supplies, first aid kits, posters related to the environment, as well as the installation of benches,  diverse furniture, first aid kits, and environmentally themed flyers.

• Bouchons Roulants, “Tumbling Caps” (2009 - till present)

  In 2009 arcenciel launched its pilot project “Bouchouns Roulants”. This project contains a double objective: on one hand educate Lebanese public on the importance of sorting and recycling trash from the source in order to preserve the environment, and on the other hand, raise awareness about handicap. 

  
  

  

  The main goal of the «Bouchouns Roulants » project is to incite the Lebanese public to sort out and collect plastic bottle caps and send it to arcenciel which in return, sells them to recycling factories. Each metric ton of caps collected and sold endows arcenciel with a wheelchair. This project has resulted in very satisfying results, mobilizing a large number of individuals, families, schools, enterprises and public administrators.

  
  

  Which bottle caps to collect?

  • clean bottle caps
  • caps from consumables, such as bottles or plastic containers without the actual container itself (water, milk, soda, mayonnaise, ketchup, yoghurt, coco powder, instant coffee, mustard caps…)
  • caps from household products, such as cleaning detergents, laundry soap, cloth softener, bleach etc… with the exception of vaporizers which contain metal springs.

  
  

  Which not to collect:

  • Dirty bottle caps
  • Caps soiled by hazardous chemical substances (medicines, detergents, disinfectants)
  • Caps from oil bottles or containers (such as engine oil and cooking oil etc..)

• Les Héros du Bonheur, « Happiness Heros » / with BEL (2010-2013)

  

  arcenciel launched in collaboration with the cheese factory BEL (Picon) in 2010/2011, this project remains active in 30 schools throughout all regions in Lebanon. The goal of which is to introduce young people to sustainable development through multidisciplinary actions; social, environmental and economic. Some of which include reforestation, sorting and recycling, renovations to schools, recreation with disabled persons, assistance to needy families, and activities with the elderly. The project continues in 2010-2013 in 40 schools with the same educational spirit for sustainable development, and focuses on the following themes: environment, health, solidarity and citizenship. The project is extended for the 2012-2-13 academic year and reaches 50 schools.

• Pilot project for waste management awareness - Ein el Helweh camp, Saida, (March till June 2012) / with the UNRWA

  arcenciel and the UNRWA have implemented a pilot project to raise awareness of waste management in sector 1 of the Palestinian refugee camp in Ein el Helweh (Saida, South Lebanon).
  arcenciel followed a participatory approach to promote the involvement and engagement of communities in improving their living conditions.
